MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (13-18, 2-10 SSC) lost both games in a doubleheader Saturday against the Barry Buccaneers (19-10, 7-2 SSC), falling, 5-1 in game one, before dropping the second, 3-1. This is the third consecutive year the Bucs have swept NSU.
Melanie Spicola (So., Umatilla, Fla.) and
Erika Garcia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) both led the Sharks in batting average on the day, hitting .400 apiece, while Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.) hit her team-high fourth home run of the sesason.
Laura Saladrigas (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) was the other Shark besides Talon with an RBI on the day.
Despite the loss in game two,
Jennie Von Doellen (Jr., Hudson Bay, Canada) (11-12) struck out another six batters in six innings and posted a solid 1.17 ERA.
Game One
The first game got off to a sluggish start for the Sharks, when Barry was able to put up two runs in the second and two more in the third, before scoring their final run in the fourth.
The Sharks' lone run of the game came in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice, hit by Saladrigas, allowing Spicola to score from third.
Barry’s Kelly Martinez and Britney Pugh each had big games for the Bucs, combining to go 3-for-5 at the plate, and each bringing in two runners.
Garcia (0-2) got the loss, pitching in 2.1 innings before being relieved by Saladrigas, who finished the game for NSU.
The Buccaneers outhit the Sharks, 11-5.
Game Two
The difference in the second game was the five errors commited by the NSU defense, which led to two of the Bucs' three runs.
The Sharks were able to get off to a much better start in the second game, taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. It was Talon’s solid at-bat that allowed her to crush a ball, with a full count, over the left field fence, giving NSU some much-needed life.
However, it was the Sharks' defensive errors that let Barry regain the lead for good in the next half-inning. The first run came on a Von Doellen wild pitch, before the second run was scored on a NSU throwing error.
The Bucs tallied its final run of the game in the fourth, off a solo shot over the left-center field fence by Martinez. The Sharks registered only one hit in the final four innings due to another stong pitching performance from Alexis Yohe (9-5).
The Sharks will take another week off before they come back home to take on the Saint Leo Lions, for another SSC weekend series. The first pitch in game one is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 22 at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
